Three different companies in France and Germany make up ARTE: the Strasbourg-based European Economic Interest Grouping ARTE GEIE as well as two other members, ARTE France and ARTE Deutschland, who are represented in ARTE GEIE’s decision-making bodies.

Making culture a living link between European citizens

As a responsible European public media, ARTE is dedicated to issues that are significant to European citizens, including promoting sustainable development and combating inequality, whether it be social, cultural, economic, geographical, gender- or disability-related.


Scope

Documentaries make up about 56% of the programming, followed by films, dramas, and series at 19%, news-related programming at 14%, and music and other performing arts at 5%. A little over two thirds of the programs that ARTE broadcasts have never been seen before. In order to provide viewers outside of France and Germany with a constantly expanding selection, ARTE bargains for the rights to all of these programs.

Short Description

A European public service channel dedicated to culture. Arte was initiated as a symbol of Franco-German friendship and had been championed since 1988 by French President François Mitterand and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. It came to fruition on 2 October 1990. As a French-German international joint venture its programmes focuses on audiences in both countries. 80% of Arte’s programming is provided by its French and German subsidiaries, each making half of the programmes. The remainder is provided by the European subsidiary and the channel’s European partners. Selected programmes are available with English, Spanish, Polish, and Italian subtitles online. The shows on Arte.tv are categorized by genre or theme. Included in them are feature films, documentaries, and documentaries on social issues, the arts, history, nature, and science, as well as television shows, short films, concerts, plays, magazine programs, news reports, and web-based formats.


Results

85% of the programmes are produced in Europe.
70% of Europeans can watch ARTE in their mother tongue.
